Komatsu is developing a “smart construction” involving drones and robots

Building drone

The world-famous Japanese company Komatsu has been building construction equipment for almost 100 years. But even the best quality equipment is nothing without people who would manage it. In any case, it was like that before. Now the company relies on the development of special robotics – as an alternative to the growth of labor costs, as well as for the organization of construction projects in hazardous conditions.

To this end, Komatsu joined forces with the US drones manufacturer Skycatch to create a robot construction supervisor.

According to the idea of the developers “smart” construction will look like this: before the work starts, the drone flies around the construction site and makes a detailed map of the area. Then the special software creates a 3D model of the construction site, calculates what part of the ground needs to be moved or converted to get the given surface. After that, the system distributes commands to all construction equipment, which starts working under remote operator control or in automatic mode.

The joint construction project Komatsu and Skycatch is called “smart construction”, which involves the maximum replacement of people with robots. Among the perspective objects to be built within the framework of the project is the stadium for the 2020 Olympic Games. This is due, above all, to the fact that in Japan there are strict restrictions on foreign labor.
