The hacker “spied on” people using their webcams

Stefan Rigo

34-year-old Stefan Rigo fell in the field of view of the National Crime Agency (NAK) of Great Britain after in his computer were found video fragments of intimate scenes of his acquaintances, filmed via Skype. In November of last year, during an international investigation, he was arrested and received a conditional 20-week term with registration as an offender in the sexual sphere.

Today, in order to learn about someone’s intimate details, it’s not necessary to peek at the keyhole and even install a hidden camera. Stefan Rigo went the other way by acquiring in the name of his girlfriend the Trojan of the remote access BlackShades (RAT), allowing to establish secret control over other people’s computers.

BlackShades application (RAT)

As the NAK spokesman said, “rats” have become a big problem, as people do not suspect that they are being monitored through their own computer and the case with Stefan Rigo confirms this. The specialist on cyber security firm FireEye Jens Monred commented on this incident:

“The BlackShades application (RAT) is quite easy to detect, but, as a rule, using it, intruders somehow believe that they are doing something heroic. Therefore, you need to be very careful when clicking on suspicious links or downloading questionable attachments to e-mail. “
